preston railway station

I've been working on this painting for probably over 3 years now(size 150x120cm).I try to keep going even though each time I finish a painting session I'm not happy. Keep telling yourself during the creative process failure is inevitable and it will all be worthwhile at the end ...its hard!!!

I have recently been painting closer to home. Over the past couple of months I have spent a lot of time over in Manchester sketching and here are some of the results.

Well 2014 is now over. I must admit I've not managed to update my blog as often as I would have liked. 2014 ended on a high with an extremely successful solo show at the Castlegate House Gallery resulting in 27 works being sold out of 30 paintings. A big thank you to everyone who purchased my work and have supported me over past few years. Hopefully my success will continue into 2015.

One exciting piece of news is that I will have works on show at the Portland Gallery in London at the end of this month I will post more details shortly. Below are a few images from my last solo show.

I have been reflecting upon my painting process following (completion ?) of my most recent work. I am becoming increasingly aware that my studio work is moving more towards an exploration in paint and that the surface is becoming more complex. It is this exploration that excites me and at the end of each session I am attempting to surprise myself. My more recent paintings contain layers, second thoughts, cancelations, searching, and changes of mind in an attempt to inhabit the three dimensional nature of the subject. A painting that is successful in my opinion relies upon a delicately adjusted set of paint marks, colour and tone that create a total harmony throughout the whole painting.

My next project is tracing  the River Derwent - I plan to walk its length producing paintings and drawings.

I have scrapped back and repainted 'The View from Tate Liverpool ' again! Much happier with it - had it framed under glass for the joint MAFA/RCA exhibition because the paint is still wet . I am also exhibiting Whitby Harbour. See images taken at framers today.
